Dr. Jimmie N. Smith

The Jimmie Smith Endowed Scholarship in Education was established in April 2001 to honor Dr. Jimmie N. Smith, a longtime faculty member at LSUS Shreveport.

The scholarship was established in his memory by his wife Gwen, his brother Charles and his sister Sue Hortman, as well as family, friends and colleagues.

Born in 1941 and reared in Cotton Valley, Louisiana, Dr. Smith obtained his doctorate in education from East Texas State University. Dr. Smith joined the LSUS faculty in 1973. During his career, he served in administration, as a faculty member, and chair of the Department of Psychology. As a highly regarded teacher, Dr. Smith enhanced the learning experience of numerous students throughout his tenure. In the community, he volunteered his time and effort to assist others. Dr. Smith died of complications from cancer in August 2000.

The scholarship rewards students for their commitment and service in support of psychology as a profession. It is unique in that it is one of the few scholarships for graduate students on campus and requires that the student be enrolled in one a graduate programs in the Department of Psychology.

Dr. Smith was highly respected and beloved at ISUS and this scholarship is a fitting tribute to his legacy.
